Application Process

How early can I apply?

You may send in your application as early as September 1 of the year you would like to serve (e.g., you would like to serve 2011-2012, so send in your application after September 1, 2010). You may not apply two years in advance. This is because much can happen in a person's life in one year and we need the most up-to-date information about our applicants as possible.

[Exception: College juniors may apply in the spring of their junior year for the teams they could serve with after graduation. Call the Recruiting office at 651.450.6833 if you have questions about this.]

How soon do I need to send in my application?

Have your application postmarked at least 2 weeks before the interview weekend of your choice. This will give us time to process you application and respond to you with a possible invitation to an interview weekend.

Do I have to answer all the questions?

Yes, we recommend answering all the questions because your application is all we have to go on when deciding whether or not to invite you to an interview weekend. Answer the questions to the best of your ability.

Can I type my application? Can I hand-write my application? Can I fax it?

Yes to all three. Please remember that it is important that your application be legible, so please print and use black ink if you hand-write it. Mailing your application is sufficient, but if you would like to fax it, our fax# is 651.450.9984. Please have your application postmarked 2 weeks prior to the interview weekend date you would like to attend.

Why do you need a picture?

The picture is used for identification purposes only: 1) to identify those who are to be picked up at the airport, bus or train stations for an interview weekend, and 2) after the interview weekend, it helps staff put a name with a face when needed.

Do I have to be Catholic?

Yes. Since NET team members are ministering in Catholic parishes and schools, team members do need to be practicing Catholics.

I have never done a retreat before, can I still apply?

Yes, each year NET has team members who, prior to NET, have never facilitated a retreat or even been on one.

Do I have to be active in my parish to be on a team?

No, but one does need to be a practicing Catholic.

What if I have a child already?

It will depend on circumstances. You will need to speak with the Recruiting Coordinator.

What if I'm divorced?

It will depend upon the situation. You will need to speak to the Recruiting Coordinator.

Interview Retreat Weekend

2010 Interview Retreat Weekends

Do I have to attend an interview weekend?

Yes, this is because the interview weekend is much more than just an interview. Applicants learn more about NET's history, prayer life, and lifestyle in addition to participating in small group discussions, large group presentations and more. The weekend is designed not only for us to get to know you better, but for you to get to know us as well.

Do I need to stay for the whole weekend?

Yes, the time we have together is relatively short (36 hours). It is important that you be present for the entire weekend so we can get to know you as well as possible in that time.

What if I'm not from the United States?

If you live in Canada, you may attend an interview run by the NET Canada staff but interview for the United States teams. If you do not live in either Canada or the United States, you may interview by phone.

Can I interview over the phone?

If you live in the United States, no. This is because the interview weekend is much more than just an interview. Applicants learn more about NET's history, prayer life, and lifestyle in addition to participating in small group discussions, large group presentations and more. The weekend is designed not only for us to get to know you better, but for you to get to know us as well.

How much does the weekend cost? What is the money for?

Interview weekends are $80.00, which is used to cover food and lodging for the weekend, and covers the cost of flying the staff members in.

What happens on the weekend?

There are times set for personal interviews, small group discussions, large group presentations, personal free time and plenty of time to get to know the staff and other applicants. Food and housing are provided.

Where do I stay?

NET will provide housing either at the meeting site or with host families.

Is there someone I could carpool with to the weekend?

After we receive you application and if you are invited to an interview weekend, please ask about carpooling. We will look to see if there is someone from your area with whom you could carpool.

Will I find out on the weekend if I was accepted?

No, NET will send you a decision letter about 3 weeks after the interview weekend.

Training/Team Life

What is the time commitment?

Team members serve from mid-August through mid-May each year. The exact dates vary by year. Team members who are invited to attend music training are asked to arrive 10 days earlier than the other team members.

What happens during training?

NET team members receive training in the following areas: loving God and loving others; the content of the Gospel message; leadership and team building skills; and retreat ministry. They follow a busy schedule that includes daily Mass and prayer, opportunities to meet individually with a priest, staff-led sharing groups, and recreation.

What happens on a NET retreat?

The retreat consists of ice breakers, large group presentations, small groups, skits, dramas, personal sharing, and an opportunity for retreatants to respond in prayer to the message of God's love.

Do I choose where I go?

No. Itineraries are assigned to each team. On average, a team serves in 7 to 9 dioceses across the country.  In addition to traveling teams, there are two Parish Teams who will remain and serve in one parish each for the entire NET year, and one Home Team which stays in Minnesota.

How are teams picked?

After some time in training, the staff will pray and meet to assemble teams. You have the possibility of being placed on either a Traveling Team, Parish Team, or Home Team.

How does a team travel/ Where do they stay?

Each traveling team is given a 12 passenger van and a trailer for the year. Team members mostly stay with host families, moving from host home to host home daily. Team members will always stay in a host home with at least one other same gender team member.

Does NET have insurance?

NET can provide team members with medical insurance if they so choose. However, pre-existing conditions are excluded.

Does it cost anything to do NET?

NET asks each team member to raise $4,000 in partnership funds. Most team members have no difficulty doing so. If you are not able to raise your partnership prior to the start of training, NET will work with you for fundraising options. The partnership each team member raises is about 1/3 of what it costs NET to keep a team member on the road for a year. The rest of NET's funding comes from retreat fees and organizational fundraising.

Does NET give loan deferments? Is a NET team member eligible for AmeriCorps?

No, NET does not give loan deferments. However, we can provide you with a letter to send to your lender asking them to give you a deferment since you will be doing service work for a year. NET team members are not eligible for Americorp grants because the work they do is religious in nature and so ineligible for federal aid.
