“For we walk by faith and not by sight.” -2 Corinthians 5:7
As missionaries, if we have learned one thing this year, it is that God works just as much in the unseen as in the seen. He asks more from us than we could have imagined. When you join NET you know that your days will be long and filled to the brim with ministry. You prepare yourself for that and ask the Lord to give you the grace to complete each day for Him. However, what we never expected is the moments where you need to give all of yourself with the knowledge that you may never see the fruit of your action. This surrender to Christ has caused more growth in our team than seeing one soul saved ever could.
It’s not that we haven’t seen growth in the youth and young adults we encounter down here in Naples. It is rather that the hidden fruits have brought us the most hardship and joy at the same time. We take a step back and we see many times where a team member has taken a leap of faith for Christ with no knowledge of what will come of it. These leaps do not discourage us but rather put a fire within us to fight for Christ all the more.
One of our team members was spending time with a young adult from our community who told him that he does not believe in God. He is open to Christianity but nothing has convinced him that there is a higher power. Our teammate felt the Holy Spirit ask him at that moment to take a leap of faith with this person. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a Direction for Our Times volume written by Anne the Lay Apostle. He gave it to this young adult and challenged him by saying, “If you read this book every day for a week, I promise you that the Lord will show up”. Our teammate had no idea if this adult would even read this book but he was confident that Christ would show up.
He walked by faith and not by sight. He chose to follow the Holy Spirit’s promptings without counting the cost. These are the choices the Lord has challenged our team with. We know He will show up. We just have to take that leap of faith for Him. Someday we will see the fruit of all our actions, but that might not be until we are at rest in Heaven.
Christ works in the unseen just as much as in the seen. Our team hopes to take this simple yet challenging truth with us for the rest of our lives. We walk by faith and not by sight. This is our joy and our mission.
