We won’t beat around the bush here. We have four weeks left on the road, and by saying that, I don’t mean to emphasize what we have left but rather what we have accomplished. In other words, we have had just over 33 weeks here on NET. 33 weeks of retreats, 33 weeks of host homes, 33 weeks of traveling, and 33 weeks of diving deeper into God and ourselves than ever before. And over 33 weeks we have learned many lessons.
So let’s go over the lessons we have learned:
- Prayer has to be first and foremost
- Community is what keeps you on the straight and narrow
- You shouldn’t park in the grass in Louisiana
- You should always account time for traffic
- Middle schoolers need time to run around
- It’s important to give time for silence
- It’s good to get out of your comfort zone
- God doesn’t want to remain surface level
- This life is NOT about you
- Giving of yourself is vital
- Reconciling with each other is so important
- And stipends disappear quickly…
But these lessons stated are just the tip of the iceberg of what we have learned and taken from this year. And even crazier than that, with 4 weeks left, the Lord still has so much more He wants to do both in us and through us.
The Lord has done a lot in us and personally He has done a lot in me. Being a second year missionary on the road, I was definitely a bit curious to see what the Lord would do this year. But this year the Lord has worked differently than I would have expected. I have grown a lot this year as a person, learning more about myself and others than I thought I would in 7 months. I have made an effort to put others before myself, to let go of my desires and strive to follow God’s will, to empty myself in order to build His Kingdom; but above all I think I can confidently say that I’ve grown more into the person God created me to be. Of course, I’ve got a long way to go, and He is NOT done yet — not by a long shot. But God has put people in my life this year that are helping me get to the end goal, who call me on when I need to be pushed, and who love and care for me more than I could ask for.
Serving on NET has been an experience that I will take with me forever, as it has not only taught me lessons for now, but also for way down the line in life. There is an inside running joke on NET that I will let you in on: although we come to NET to serve God, His kingdom, and to share with others the impact God has made on our life, God takes this opportunity to do even more with us, the missionaries, than we could ever imagine. Wherever you are, whatever part of life you are in right now, I challenge to you not be afraid to exhaust all effort in your search for Truth and God. You will find that they are one and the same, and inevitably find fulfillment and wholeness. I’ve heard multiple times that, “Holiness is finding wholeness in God.” And even when you know you have found Him, remember that there is always more He wants to do in you and with you.
See you in heaven!
